Florence with her children, Joan and John on a beach, presumably on the south coast of England close to their home. The barbed wire in the background indicates that it was taken during the war. As the war didn't start until Sept 1939, I suspect that this was taken in summer 1940. John was born in August 1938. Maybe this was John's birthday treat?

All three were killed the City of Benares was torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean in September 1940, possibly only a few weeks after this picture was taken.

Joan Croasdaille taken when she was 5. Each year the New York paper "The Daily News" ran a Beautiful Child contest in their Sunday edition. People would send in pictures of their children up to age 10 and each Sunday for two or three month the paper would published a couple of pages of them, and people would vote each week for their favorite.. Then in the end they would have people vote for their favorite from among the weekly winners and she or he would win a certificate and $25. My grandmother sent that picture in and it was the final Grand Prize winner. She was dubbed the "English Shirley Temple" and grandmother sent her and Flo the $25. Information from Michelle Wilson, Florence's niece.
